EDI is a complex technology that is difficult to manage and maintain, and EDI integration adds an extra level to this complexity. Not only do multiple trading partners, message types, and connection protocols need to be maintained, but this information also needs to be translated into an ERP system that is constantly moving to new versions with differing requirements.
In addition, EDI expertise is becoming harder to find, relying on an ageing group of developers with a niche skill set. As a result, it’s not advisable to try and implement EDI integration in-house, as the vast majority of these projects end in failure.
